Agong Proclaimed First Chancellor Of Widad University College

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah was today proclaimed the first chancellor of the Widad University College at the Istana Negara here.

Also present at the proclamation ceremony was his consort, the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah.

Others present included Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Deputy Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching and Widad Business Group's executive chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ikmal Opat Abdullah.

Widad University College which is located in Kuantan, Pahang was upgraded from the former Kolej Shahputra in 2011.

At the proclamation ceremony, Tuanku Abdul Halim said Widad University College must give full focus to studies which could attract international students.

"Science studies such as medicine, dentistry and pharmacy should be strengthened so that Widad University College can be on par with other universities locally and internationally which offer the same.

"As such, I urge all parties related to education especially at the higher education level to assist Widad University College to achieve this objective," he said.

Tuanku Abdul Halim urged the university college to increase efforts in all areas in order to achieve greater excellence and always be on top.

"I believe that this objective can be achieved if the management of Widad University College works closely with all relevant parties as a team towards achieving the common objectives, making Malaysia a hub of international tertiary education.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Muhammad Ikmal said the university college would have the best leadership and guidance as Tuanku Abdul Halim was an intellect with wide experience.

Widad University College has drawn up three main strategies in its transformation efforts, including increasing the involvement of international students in the effort to help the government make Malaysia the regional hub of education.
